River Crossing Endangers Lives

Residents of Bolloh District, Grand Kru County, are raising serious concerns over the dangerous condition of the Nyankupon River, describing the crossing as a major threat to transportation, businesses, and human lives.

Residents of Bolloh District, Grand Kru County, are calling for urgent government intervention over the dangerous condition of the Nyankupon River along the Civilized Village Road, warning that the crossing poses a serious threat to travelers, businesses and human lives.

Speaking to Verity Online News on Saturday, October 3, 2026, several residents described the river crossing as a longstanding transportation challenge, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall and rising water levels.

According to community members, more than ten people have reportedly lost their lives over the years while attempting to cross the river. Residents also said motorbikes, goods and other property have on several occasions been swept away or damaged while travelers attempt to navigate the crossing, resulting in significant financial losses.

A video obtained by Verity Online News reportedly shows the difficult conditions faced by travelers using the crossing. With no permanent bridge constructed across the river, residents are currently relying on a makeshift wooden board to move from one side to the other.

Community members described the situation as unsafe, particularly for motorcyclists, traders and pedestrians who depend on the route to transport people and goods.

Residents are therefore appealing to the Government of Liberia to prioritize the construction of a permanent and safe bridge over the Nyankupon River and improve the road connecting communities in the area.

They believe addressing the situation would reduce the risk of fatalities and property loss while improving transportation and trade within Bolloh District.

Residents further said a permanent crossing would enhance access to surrounding communities and support economic activities in District #2, Grand Kru County, where many people depend on the road for their daily movement and livelihoods.
