The Government of Liberia, through the Ministry of State for Presidential Affairs, is set to launch a new scholarship and financial aid program aimed at supporting university students in need.
The initiative, named the “Presidential Affairs Scholarship and Financial Aid Program”, is designed to help students overcome financial barriers while also fostering community service.
Speaking at a press conference, Cornelia Kruah, the Deputy Minister for Administration at the Ministry of State, said the program reflects President Joseph Boakai’s commitment to empowering young Liberians by enhancing their access to higher education.
The scholarship will not only cover academic expenses but will also provide financial aid to underprivileged students.
According to Kruah, the program has been in development for several months. “We received approximately 700 applications from universities across the country, and after a thorough vetting process, 455 applicants were selected,” she said.
One of the program’s key components is a requirement for students to engage in community service. Applicants must submit project plans that identify and address challenges in their local communities or schools.
These projects will be presented ahead of the program’s official launch, encouraging students to give back to society while pursuing their education.
Additionally, the program has grouped students into teams of ten to discuss and plan potential mentorship projects, allowing them to guide and inspire others in their communities.
An initial budget of $150,000 has been allocated to support the program. Kruah expressed excitement about the initiative’s potential, especially its focus on community development.
“We hope to maintain this level of enthusiasm among students as they work on projects that will positively impact their communities,” she said.
