The Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) has acknowledged the receipt of an official complaint by Gbarpolu County District #2 Representative Luther Collins.
The LACC in a statement release on Monday, October 21, 2024, disclosed that there are serious allegations against several members of the House of Representatives, who are purportedly involved in bribery aimed at influencing the removal of the Speaker of the 55th Legislature.
The LACC release revealed that they have reportedly traced a total of US$750,000 in alleged funds intended for lawmakers, purportedly funneled through accounts associated with the Ministry of Transport and the Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation (LWSC).
In light of these troubling allegations, the LACC has pledged to approach the situation with transparency and thoroughness.
The LACC disclosed on Monday that they have received multiple complaints from various stakeholders urging an investigation into these claims.
If validated, these allegations pose a significant threat to the integrity of Liberia’s legislative process and democratic principles.
The LACC stresses that any form of bribery undermines public trust in elected officials and disrupts the rule of law.
In response to these claims and counterclaims, the LACC is moving forward with a formal investigation.
“The commission is committed to investigating any individual, regardless of their status, if their actions suggest corruption,” the release stated.
The LACC further announced that preliminary assessments are underway to gather facts and evidence, with the LACC collaborating with the Ministry of Justice (MOJ), the Financial Intelligence Agency (FIA), and other relevant integrity bodies.
The LACC assures the public that the investigation will uphold fairness and impartiality.
“It is crucial that all involved parties receive due process and that conclusions are not drawn prematurely.”
The release emphasized that the LACC aim is to establish factual evidence, ensuring that appropriate actions are taken if any wrongdoing is uncovered.
The LACC emphasizes a strict zero-tolerance policy towards corruption, noting that bribery, in any guise, is illegal and unacceptable.
The Commission assured Liberians and International partners that individuals found guilty of corrupt practices, regardless of their position, will face accountability under the law.
Call for Cooperation and Public Patience:
The LACC urges all members of the House, public officials, and anyone with pertinent information to cooperate fully with the investigation.
The Commission also appeals to the public and media for patience, as speculation could undermine the investigation’s integrity.
The LACC says it remains committed to promoting transparency, accountability, and the rule of law.
“Should these allegations be substantiated, it would indicate a serious breach of trust by elected officials toward the people of Liberia, stressing that the LACC’s duty is to restore this trust by ensuring accountability for any proven acts of bribery or corruption,” the release stated.
LACC reaffirms its dedication to protecting the integrity of Liberia’s institutions, emphasizing that any confirmed acts of bribery will result in appropriate legal and administrative repercussions.
