Civil Law Court Issues Contempt Charges on IG Coleman, Police Unit 109

Monrovia, Liberia – The Civil Law Court at the Temple of Justice has issued a third writ of citation, ordering the Inspector General of the Liberia National Police, Col. Gregory O. W. Coleman, and Officer Victor Gboyah, unit 109 to appear before the court on Thursday, January 16, 2025, at 11:00 AM.

This follows their alleged repeated failure to appear in court despite being duly served with previous summonses.

During Monday, January 13, 2025, proceedings, His Honor, Judge George W. Smith, noted the absence of the two defendants, despite confirmation of service.

The prosecuting lawyer Cllr. G. Wiefueh Alfred Sayeh argued that their consistent failure to appear shows a blatant disrespect for the court and the rule of law.

The Ministry of Justice, in association with the Law Offices of Sayeh and Sayeh, has strongly urged the court to take further action, including issuing a writ of arrest, for contempt of court.

Judge Smith expressed serious concern over the defendants’ actions, which, he stated, had hindered the court from performing its constitutional and statutory duties.

He emphasized that the matter was not about the criminality of the accused, but rather their contemptuous conduct, which undermines public confidence in the legal system.

The court also pointed to potential violations of sections 12.21 and 12.70(8) of the Criminal Procedure Law, particularly regarding official oppression and the denial of constitutional rights related to property.

The refusal of the IG Coleman and Officer Gboyah fail to appear as ordered, they will issue a writ of arrest as per legal provisions.

The court’s decision to issue a writ of arrest is expected to send a strong message about the importance of respecting judicial authority in the country.

Victor Gboyah is being allegedly linked to a land dispute in Clara Town which is not a party.

But is reported that officer Gboyah is using his influence as a senior officer of the Liberia National Police to aid a party in the land dispute.
