AFL Cracks Down on Illegal Mining, Arrests Seven in Sapo National Park

KORJAYEE, Wakaba Statutory District, Sinoe County — In a major security operation aimed at protecting Liberia’s natural resources, the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) has arrested seven individuals suspected of engaging in illicit mining activities within the boundaries of Sapo National Park.

The apprehension took place on Thursday, November 5, 2026, at approximately 3:00 p.m. GMT in New Zwedru, an interior area situated deep within the protected national reserve.

According to field reports, the suspects were intercepted and detained by AFL personnel stationed at the Korjayee detachment during routine security patrols inside the conservation zone.

First Sergeant Lawrence Nyenpan confirmed the arrests to reporters, disclosing that several of the suspects were caught operating mechanical washing equipment—locally known as KalaKala machines—to extract minerals unlawfully from the parklands.

Following their detention, the seven suspects were formally transferred to the Juarzon Police Detachment, where local law enforcement is processing the case ahead of anticipated court proceedings.

A Threat to Liberia’s Natural Heritage

The latest military intervention underscores mounting concerns over rampant illegal mining and human encroachment threatening the ecological integrity of Sapo National Park.

As Liberia’s premier protected rainforest, Sapo is internationally recognized for its rich biodiversity, serving as a vital sanctuary for rare wildlife species, indigenous flora, and delicate river ecosystems. Unregulated mining operations within its borders have been linked to severe environmental degradation, including widespread deforestation, chemical pollution of water sources, and the displacement of native wildlife.

While the AFL’s decisive action signals a renewed enforcement commitment to safeguarding the nation’s protected areas, legal analysts and conservationists note that public attention will remain focused on the judicial process to ensure accountability.
