Police in Gbarnga, Bong County, have forwarded a man identified as Sampson Sumo to court on charges of impersonation after he was allegedly caught posing as a member of the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL).
Sumo, a resident of Gbarnga and reportedly a gospel musician, was arrested following allegations that he falsely represented himself as a military officer.
Bong County Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) William Johnson, said the suspect allegedly went to Depot One in Gbarnga and attempted to interfere with an ongoing police investigation while claiming to be an AFL officer.
According to ACP Johnson, officers requested that Sumo identify himself with valid military credentials. Instead of producing an identification card, he reportedly displayed a photograph on his mobile phone showing himself dressed in military uniform.
The Depot One Commander, Chief Inspector of Police Morhafee Jabateh, subsequently contacted officials at the Armed Forces of Liberia barracks in Gbarnga to verify the claim.
Military authorities confirmed that Sumo is not a member of the Armed Forces of Liberia, leading to his arrest and subsequent prosecution.
Police further disclosed that the suspect had previously been seen in several communities around Gbarnga wearing full military uniform while allegedly claiming to be a senior AFL officer.
Sumo has since been forwarded to court, where he is expected to face prosecution on impersonation charges.
