Bill introduced to make DNA testing mandatory for all newborns

By Emmanuel M Kangar Jr.

A Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central Constituency in Ghana, Kwame Asare Obeng alias ‘Plus A’, has introduced a bill seeking to make DNA testing mandatory for all newborns in order to confirm their biological fathers.

According to Obeng, even though no law prevents a married woman or any woman from having an affair outside marriage or partnership, honesty must prevail when pregnancy occurs. Obeng said it is wrong to make a man takes responsibility for a child who is not biologically his.

Obeng said a woman who attributes a pregnancy to a man who is not should be punished by law. The bill intends to criminalize parternity fraud in Ghana. Obeng says men are being deceived too many times which often lead to broken marriages, partnerships, and neglect of children.

“The level of cheating has gone so high,” a local radio commentator said. The bill, which is likely to be passed according to parliamentarian sources, seeks to avert future chaos and trauma caused by deception.
