Boakai Dedicates 20MW Solar Plant at Mount Coffee, Boosts Push for Cleaner Energy

President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. has dedicated a 20-megawatt solar power plant at the Mount Coffee Hydropower Complex, marking a major step in Liberia’s efforts to expand electricity access and move toward cleaner energy.

The US$16 million facility, part of the Regional Emergency Solar Power Intervention (RESPITE), was commissioned on June 5, 2026, less than two years after construction began in October 2024. The project is expected to strengthen power supply and support future expansion of the Mount Coffee Hydropower Plant by an additional 42 megawatts.

At the dedication, President Boakai said reliable electricity is keen to economic growth, job creation, and improved public services. He noted that many sectors, including health, education, business, and manufacturing, continue to struggle because of limited and costly power.

He also announced that Liberia has secured an additional US$57 million from the World Bank to further expand the energy sector. The funding will increase solar capacity, support a 12-megawatt battery storage system, and improve facilities at Mount Coffee. He added that 22 megawatts of previously lost generation capacity have already been restored.

The President said the government is also working to expand transmission and distribution networks so that more communities can benefit from electricity.

The RESPITE initiative, launched in 2022 by the World Bank in partnership with Liberia and Sierra Leone, aims to address power shortages and support renewable energy development across the region.
