The wave of corruption allegations being staged within the Unity Party-led Administration of President Joseph Boakai keeps piling up, leaving staunch supporters like the Economic Freedom Fighters of Liberia (EFFL) to express concerns that could possibly lead to a political withdrawal.
Though the EFFL expressed its support for the presidency of Joseph Boakai, such support seems to be gradually wearing away due to the leadership deficit Liberia is facing, as articulated by the organization.
This comes in the wake of the institution’s demand for an investigation into the purchase of a luxury vehicle by Minister of Commerce and Industry, Amin Modad, which has sparked national controversy.
“While we remain fully committed to supporting this president, he must now hold his officials accountable. Failure to do so would leave the president politically, legally, and morally powerless to hold previous government officials accountable.”
Amid this continual public scrutiny, the Economic Freedom Fighters of Liberia (EFFL) made a poignant call, demanding an immediate investigation into the purchase of an alleged luxury vehicle by Liberia’s Commerce and Industry Minister Mr. Amin Modad.
The group, in its disappointment, wants President Joseph N. Boakai to commission an immediate investigation into the circumstances surrounding the purchase of a 2024 Chevy Suburban by Mr. Amin Modad, reportedly valued at over $100,000.
The EFFL states that it is deeply concerned about the acquisition of a high-priced luxury vehicle by Mr. Modad, especially given the current economic hardships faced by ordinary Liberians.
In the spirit of transparency and accountability, the EFFL emphasizes the importance of ensuring that public figures uphold the highest standards of financial integrity.
In a recent release, the EFFL indicated: “This acquisition raises serious questions, and the EFFL condemns the ongoing abuse of power and influence within certain leadership circles.”
The group noted that the sacrifices and collective struggles of the Liberian people cannot continue to be manipulated for personal gains by individuals in positions of influence to the detriment of the country.
According to the EFFL, it stands firm in its mission to safeguard the interests of all Liberians.
The EFFL further stated that Liberia’s long journey toward freedom, justice, and equity must not be undermined by a few who prioritize their personal benefits over the welfare of the majority.
“We categorically oppose this trend of selfish leadership and reaffirm our commitment to standing with the people of Liberia in their fight for a fair and just society. To maintain public confidence in our institutions, the EFFL calls on President Boakai to swiftly establish a committee to investigate the source of funding for this purchase,” the release added.
The pro-political and advocacy movement is also demanding that the investigation determine whether public resources or questionable financial practices were involved.
“The people of Liberia deserve transparency, and this investigation is essential to ensure that justice and equality prevail.”
The EFFL is simultaneously requesting that the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) commence an immediate investigation into the situation, urging the National Legislature and the Executive to proceed with the immediate cancellation of the Metech contract over alleged various violations.
The Economic Freedom Fighters of Liberia (EFFL) conveyed in their message to the Boakai-led government: “We supported this government to fight against the misuse of public funds and not to repeat the mistakes of the past. It is becoming clear that certain officials within the Executive are complacent in the misuse of power and view the people’s revolution that brought President Boakai to power as an opportunity for grandstanding and personal gain.”
