Buah Jlateken, a community in Buah Administrative District, Grand Kru County, located between Buah Iron Bridge and Geeken, is facing a rice shortage that has reportedly lasted nearly two months amid deplorable road conditions.
Speaking to Verity News in Jlateken on October 19, 2026, Town Chief Philip T. Kunwon disclosed that residents have been struggling with food shortages following a poor rice harvest.
According to Kunwon, community members cultivated rice on their farms, but birds reportedly destroyed much of the crop, resulting in a significantly reduced harvest.
With rice yet to arrive in the town, Kunwon said residents have been relying on cassava and plantain to sustain themselves while waiting for supplies to reach the community.
The situation has been compounded by deplorable road conditions along the Barclayville–Jlateken route, making it difficult and costly for traders to transport goods into the community.
Kunwon explained that the price of rice has increased significantly. A 25-kilogram bag, previously sold for L$3,700, is now reportedly selling for L$4,000, while a cup of rice costs L$100.
Despite the hardship, the town chief expressed appreciation to businesspeople who continue to supply the community, acknowledging that the poor road conditions have contributed to the rising cost of goods.
He called on the relevant authorities to urgently rehabilitate the road, stressing that residents continue to endure significant difficulties due to limited road access and the high cost of basic commodities.
The situation highlights the growing challenges facing residents of Buah Administrative District, where poor road connectivity is worsening food insecurity and placing additional pressure on already struggling households.
