CDC Bassa Chairman Condemns Demolition of Roadside Structures in Buchanan

BUCHANAN, Grand Bassa County – The Chairman of the Grand Bassa Chapter of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), Janjay Baikpeh, has criticized the Unity Party-led government over the recent demolition of roadside structures in Buchanan City, describing the exercise as abrupt and detrimental to local businesses.

Speaking to CDC supporters in Buchanan on Friday, July 3, 2026, Baikpeh said the demolition had left many residents counting significant losses after their business premises and properties were destroyed. He argued that the government failed to adequately consider the economic impact of the exercise on individuals who had invested their savings in establishing businesses along the affected areas.

The CDC county chairman contrasted the current exercise with road construction projects undertaken during the administration of former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, claiming that businesses were allowed to continue operating alongside major infrastructure projects at the time.

Baikpeh urged Liberians to remember the demolition exercise when they head to the polls in the next general elections, suggesting that the government’s handling of the matter reflects its approach to the welfare of ordinary citizens.

The demolition has generated mixed reactions across Buchanan. While several affected business owners have expressed frustration over the loss of their livelihoods, government officials have defended the exercise, saying it is necessary to clear public rights-of-way and facilitate ongoing road development projects.

The exercise continues to draw public attention as residents assess its impact on businesses and livelihoods in Buchanan City.
