The National leadership of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) has overturned the expulsion of Margibi County District #2 Representative Ivar Jones.
Hon. Ivar Kokulo Jones was expelled on Thursday, January 2, 2025, by the party’s Margibi County chapter for collaborating with a group of lawmakers known as the “Majority Bloc” to unseat their party’s Speaker, HonCllr J Fonati Koffa. The decision, announced by CDC Margibi Chapter Chair Gibson Sarvaciir, sparked immediate controversy.
CDC National Chairman Janga Augustus Kowo announced the nullification on Facebook on Saturday, January 4, 2025.
Kowo’s post stated that suspending or expulsing a partisan’s membership within the party’s structure must adhere to constitutional provisions that ensure due process.
Representative Jones’ expulsion raised concerns about internal party divisions within the CDC, mainly in Margibi, where Hon. Jones serves as a representative for one of the districts.
The national party’s swift action to reverse the decision suggests an attempt to quell these divisions and maintain party unity.
The incident highlights the ongoing power dynamics within the ruling party where the embattled opposition Speaker is seated, but another person is doing his job.
As it stands, Hon. Jones is still an executive member of the Congress for Democracy Change ( CDC ), which is, by extension, the Coalition for Democratic Change.
