Chinese Miners and Liberian Manager Handed Over for Prosecution

Monrovia – Three Chinese nationals and their Liberian manager were handed over to the Ministry of Justice on Monday evening by the Ministry of Mines and Energy for prosecution over illegal mining activities in Grand Bassa County. The suspects, linked to Hongtu Mining Company, are accused of violating Liberia’s Minerals and Mining Law of 2000 by engaging in illicit mining despite an official closure order.

The Ministry of Mines and Energy, through its Inspectorate Division, executed the latest crackdown, led by Inspector-General Agatius Coker and supported by Bureau of Mines Regional Coordinator Foday Varney. The operation resulted in the seizure of contraband materials used by the company, effectively shutting down its operations in Mat House Town, Dweh Community, District #1.

Authorities said Hongtu Mining Company had been issued a closure order on March 20, 2025, but defiantly continued its illegal activities. As a result, the suspects were turned over to the Justice Ministry through the Solicitor General and a team of prosecutors to face legal action.

The latest enforcement action underscores the government’s commitment to combating illicit mining, which has long posed economic and environmental threats to the country. The Ministry of Mines and Energy has vowed to intensify its efforts against illegal operators as part of broader efforts to regulate Liberia’s mining sector.
