A civilian is recovering at the John F. Kennedy Medical Center following the negligent discharge of a firearm by an off-duty police officer at the Iron Gate checkpoint in Brewerville on the evening of August 31, 2025.
The Liberia National Police (LNP) confirmed that the shooting occurred between 9:00 and 10:00 PM and involved Sergeant Abdullaziz S. Kromah, identified as a member of Class 45 with ID number 5766. Sgt. Kromah, who is assigned to the Kpaykor Police Station in Brewerville, was not on active duty at the time of the incident.
Preliminary investigations reveal that the firearm discharged was not Sgt. Kromah’s official service weapon. Instead, the weapon is registered to Inspector Monica Zayzay of the LNP’s Emergency Response Unit (ERU). How Sgt. Kromah came into possession of the firearm remains a key focus of the ongoing investigation.
The victim of the shooting, identified as Hassan Carter, sustained injuries and was immediately transported to JFK Medical Center, where he is currently receiving medical attention. His condition has not yet been made public.
Sgt. Kromah has been taken into custody as investigators work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident. The LNP emphasized its commitment to transparency and accountability in a public statement issued Monday morning.
“No officer will be shielded from responsibility,” the statement read. “We stand firm in our duty to serve with integrity and openness. The public will be kept fully informed as the investigation progresses.”
The LNP has not yet announced whether disciplinary or criminal charges will be filed, pending the outcome of the investigation.
