A high-level political mission from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), led by Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, has urged all stakeholders in Liberia to respect the impending ruling of the country’s Supreme Court. The mission, deployed from March 23 to 27, 2025, was tasked with addressing the ongoing political impasse within the House of Representatives and assessing the broader political situation in the country.
The delegation, which also included key figures from ECOWAS and the United Nations, met with President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, former Presidents Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and George Weah, and senior officials, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Sarah Beysolow Nyanti. The mission consulted with stakeholders in Liberia’s political and diplomatic spheres, including the leadership of the House of Representatives and representatives of the international community.
During the mission, ECOWAS prioritized peace, stability, and development in Liberia. The delegation’s recommendations call for closer collaboration among Liberia’s political leaders, particularly between President Boakai and his predecessors, to foster a united approach toward national progress. The mission also highlighted the need for all stakeholders to respect the Supreme Court’s ruling, which is expected to have significant implications for the political impasse in the House of Representatives.
ECOWAS further urged the development of a roadmap to end the deadlock in the House’s leadership and called for international support to help resolve the political crisis. In his address, Prof. Gambari assured Liberia’s stakeholders of ECOWAS’s continued commitment to promoting peace, good governance, and sustainable development.
The mission’s visit comes at a crucial time in Liberia’s political landscape. The impasse in the House of Representatives has created uncertainty around the nation’s legislative functions. As the political crisis unfolds, ECOWAS remains a key player in facilitating dialogue and ensuring that Liberia remains on a path to democratic consolidation.
ECOWAS’s appeal for unity and respect for judicial processes highlights the regional body’s role in maintaining stability in West Africa. Liberia’s ongoing challenges are critical to the region’s commitment to peaceful democratic governance.
