EPA Shuts Down Two Mining Companies in Bong County Over Environmental Violations

JORPOLU, BONG COUNTY – The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of Liberia has ordered the closure of two mining companies operating in Bong County for multiple environmental violations uncovered during the agency’s ongoing Nationwide Environmental Compliance Monitoring Exercise.

The companies affected are Huiren Mining Inc. and Jorpolu Clan Mining Company, both accused of breaching key provisions of Liberia’s Environmental Protection and Management Law (EPML) and related environmental regulations.

According to the EPA, Huiren Mining Inc. was shut down following a series of non-compliance notices issued after inspectors discovered that the company was operating with an expired Environmental Permit. Investigators also found improper management and storage of obsolete and hazardous chemicals, along with the company’s failure to obtain the required Chemical Registration and Importation License.

The EPA said the violations also contravened Liberia’s Chemical Importation, Transportation, Handling and Storage Guidelines.

In a separate action, the EPA ordered the immediate closure of Jorpolu Clan Mining Company after investigators reported what the agency described as “serious environmental violations” resulting in significant environmental degradation and pollution.

An EPA Shutdown Order issued on May 22, 2026, stated that the company had persistently violated the Environmental Protection and Management Law and other environmental regulations.

The EPA says the enforcement actions form part of efforts to ensure environmental compliance and protect communities and ecosystems affected by mining operations across the country.

Further details are expected as investigations continue.
