From UL Closure to Prison Conditions: Senate Sets 15 National Priorities for Action

From the closure of the University of Liberia to prison conditions, county development funding, and petroleum pricing, the Liberian Senate has identified 15 national issues for priority legislative action during the third segment of the third session of the 55th Legislature.

The priorities emerged from a day-long retreat held Monday, October 19, where senators deliberated on key national concerns and agreed to consolidate them into a legislative agenda for action.

The discussions covered five major areas: county development and decentralization, education and human capital, governance and justice, economic and fiscal matters, and legislative operations.

In education, senators examined disparities among county universities, the closure of the University of Liberia, the status of volunteer teachers, and the renovation of schools across the country.

On county development, discussions focused on Social Development Funds, ArcelorMittal Liberia’s Social Development Plan, the role of County Councils, farm-to-market roads, and county budgets.

The Senate also reviewed governance and justice concerns, including prison conditions, tenure-related issues at the Governance Commission, and the conduct of confirmation hearings.

Economic and fiscal matters featured prominently, with senators discussing petroleum pricing through the Liberia Petroleum Refining Company, the Legislature’s role in national budget appropriations, taxation, Medtek, and the Cargo Tracking Note. Updates on the Senate’s budget were also considered.

As part of efforts to strengthen legislative operations, senators discussed bills pending in committee rooms and the need to standardize Senate employees’ salaries in line with comparable positions within the Executive Branch.

Following the retreat, Senate President Pro-Tempore Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence said the discussions would produce a consolidated legislative agenda outlining priority actions for the current session.

She said the document would guide the Senate in organizing and advancing legislative priorities in the interest of the Liberian people.
