“Gbarnga Prison Packed Beyond Capacity” — Bong County Attorney Sounds Fresh Alarm

By Matalay S. Kollie

Bong County Attorney Jonathan Flomo has once again raised serious concerns over the growing overcrowding crisis at the Gbarnga Central Prison in Gbarnga.

Speaking during the opening of the May Term of Court at the 9th Judicial Circuit Court, Attorney Flomo disclosed that the prison facility, originally built to accommodate approximately 130 inmates, is currently holding about 369 prisoners, nearly three times its intended capacity.

He described the situation as troubling and unsustainable, warning that the overcrowded conditions pose serious risks to the health, safety, and wellbeing of both inmates and correctional officers.

Attorney Flomo further appealed to Prince Moye and other county authorities to prioritize prison infrastructure in the upcoming national budget.

According to him, urgent funding is needed either to expand the current prison facility or construct a new correctional center capable of properly accommodating the increasing inmate population.
