POLAR, GBARZON – A domestic dispute turned into a gruesome scene of violence in the early hours of Thursday, leaving a local woman fighting for her life and her attacker in critical condition after a failed suicide attempt.
At approximately 2:00 a.m. on April 16, 2026, Edward “Red” Gbayee, a man in his 60s, allegedly attacked his longtime girlfriend, Odeser Garley.
Family sources told Verity News that the violence erupted after Gbayee attempted to force himself on Garley. When she resisted his advances, Gbayee reportedly took a knife and threatened her.
The confrontation escalated rapidly. Gbayee allegedly plunged the knife into Garley’s chest and attempted to slit her throat.
Community Intervention and Retaliation
The victim’s screams alerted neighbors, who rushed to the scene to intervene. As the community moved to retaliate against Gbayee, community police officers were forced to step in to prevent a lynching.
Officers secured Gbayee inside his residence to de-escalate the volatile situation and protected him from the approaching mob.
While barricaded alone inside the house, Gbayee reportedly turned the weapon on himself, attempting to commit suicide by cutting his own esophagus.
Both the victim and the suspect were initially rushed to a health facility in Zleh Town before being transferred to Zwedru for emergency surgery.
Latest information have it that Odeser Garley is currently responding to treatment in Zwedru while Edward Gbayee remains in critical condition.
Medical authorities have advised his family to seek immediate transfer to Monrovia for advanced surgical intervention.
Gbayee, a former resident of Toe Town, had reportedly moved to Polar to live with Garley following a divorce from his ex-wife.
This is a developing story.
