The Inter-Religious Council of Liberia (IRCL) had initially and officially endorsed a draft public health bill that is now before the Liberian Senate for passage. The bill, when passed into law, would make abortion legal in Liberia.
In less than 24 hours after the Catholic Church of Liberia issued a strong statement vehemently opposing the privision of the bill that tends to legalize abortion, the Inter-Religious Council has summersaulted on its endorsement of abortion, stating, “The religious community rejects abortion.”
The Catholic Church said in its press statement issued yesterday, June 7, 2026, “Thou shall not kill.”
The Inter-Religious Council of Liberia (IRCL) is an interfaith coalition that is made up of the Liberia Council of Churches (LCC) and the National Muslim Council of Liberia (NMCL)
