The Government of Japan has approved a grant of US$2.6 million for the establishment of the Liberia-Japan Wood Workshop and Processing and Training Facility in Nimba County.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the project will unfold in three progressive phases, strategically designed to maximize impact and ensure long-term sustainability.
The project kicks off with Phase One, which involves an initial investment of over US$530,000 from Japan’s Counterpart Fund.
Phase one will focus on building essential infrastructure for the workshop and processing facility.
Plans include the construction of state-of-the-art workshops equipped with cutting-edge machinery, setting up training areas to impart technical skills, and establishing administrative offices to oversee operations.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Phase One is projected to generate immediate employment for approximately 480 individuals.
These jobs will span across various sectors, including construction, administrative roles, training staff, and technical expertise.
The recruitment process will prioritize local residents of Nimba County and surrounding regions, ensuring that economic benefits directly impact the community.
Upon successful completion of Phase One, the project will transition into Phase Two, focusing on expanding the facility’s operational capacity and enhancing efficiency.
According to the Ministry, phase two will entail acquiring additional machinery and equipment to bolster production capabilities, constructing auxiliary buildings to support expanded operations, and implementing advanced processing techniques geared towards plywood production.
Moreover, Phase Two will emphasize capacity building through comprehensive training programs.
Local workers will receive training in woodworking skills, machinery operation, safety protocols, and environmental conservation practices.
These initiatives aim to empower the workforce with the necessary expertise to sustainably manage and operate the facility, thereby ensuring its long-term viability and contributing to skill development in the region.
The final phase of the project will focus on achieving full-scale operational status for the Liberia-Japan Wood Workshop and Processing Facility.
By this stage, the facility is expected to produce high-quality wood products that meet domestic market demands.
