Liberia, France Deepen Youth and Sports Cooperation After High-Level Paris Meeting

By Myean Torgbean

The Governments of Liberia and France have taken a significant step toward strengthening bilateral relations in youth empowerment and sports development following a high-level meeting between senior officials in Paris.

The talks brought together Liberia’s Minister of Youth and Sports, Cornelia Wonkerleh Kruah, and France’s Minister of Sports, Youth and Community Life, Marina Ferrari. The meeting was facilitated by the Embassy of Liberia in France under the leadership of Ambassador Dr. Teeko Yorlay.

According to Ambassador Yorlay, the engagement marks a concrete step toward implementing outcomes from earlier discussions held in October 2025 between Liberian President Joseph Nyuma Boakai and French President Emmanuel Macron.

Those discussions laid the groundwork for enhanced cooperation between the two nations across key sectors, including youth and sports.

The Paris meeting also builds on a bilateral agreement signed by Liberia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sara Beysolow Nyanti, and France’s Minister Delegate for Francophonie and International Partnerships, Éléonore Caroit. The agreement underscores both countries’ commitment to expanding sports collaboration and strengthening people-to-people ties.

Officials from both sides reaffirmed their shared vision to deepen cooperation, with a focus on practical initiatives aimed at empowering young people and developing sports infrastructure in Liberia.

Key outcomes of the meeting include the establishment of a joint technical working group to oversee implementation of agreed initiatives, as well as plans to launch a youth and sports exchange program designed to promote skills development and cultural understanding.

The two governments also agreed to explore sustainable financing options, including potential collaboration with the French Development Agency (AFD), to support sports infrastructure projects across Liberia. Additional priorities include increasing youth participation in both traditional and digital sports and advancing women’s involvement in athletics.

Discussions further considered Liberia’s possible inclusion in the HAVOBA program, which officials described as a potentially transformative opportunity for the country’s sports sector.

In a sign of continued momentum, Minister Ferrari accepted an invitation to visit Liberia, a move expected to further solidify ties between the two nations.

Ambassador Yorlay praised the outcome of the meeting, highlighting it as a testament to effective collaboration and shared commitment. He also commended the leadership of Minister Nyanti, noting her role in driving Liberia’s foreign policy agenda and fostering impactful international partnerships.

The meeting signals growing diplomatic and developmental cooperation between Liberia and France, with both countries positioning youth and sports as central pillars of their partnership.
