MONROVIA, Liberia — A young Liberian worker, identified as Francis Flomo, has been allegedly assaulted and beaten by two Chinese nationals believed to be his employers at a Chinese-owned restaurant in Oldest Congo Town on Sunday, September 20, 2026. Multiple employees working at the Restaurant have confirmed the incident.
The incident occurred near the SKD Boulevard Junction, adjacent the Giant Gym and opposite the Ministry of Health.
According to accounts from fellow workers who witnessed the incident, Flomo was allegedly attacked after he was seen using his mobile phone during working hours. The workers claimed he had not provoked the two men before the alleged assault.
They further alleged that the two Chinese nationals struck Flomo with sticks and steel rod multiple times while he was defenseless.
Police later intervened after the incident was reported by individuals who witnessed the confrontation. Flomo, the two Chinese nationals and others were reportedly taken to the Palace Police Station in Swankamore Community, Oldest Congo Town, for questioning.
However, the handling of the case at the police station has raised concerns among those involved. Some workers accused the police of covering up and compromising the case.
According to the account provided, an officer handling the matter allegedly charged all three individuals—Flomo and the two Chinese nationals—with disorderly conduct, rather than treating Flomo solely as the alleged victim of an assault.
The circumstances surrounding the police decision, including an allegation that other Chinese nationals arrived at the station with a police officer before the charge was changed, could not be independently verified from the information provided by the fellow workers.
Following the police intervention, Flomo was reportedly dismissed from his job by the two Chinese nationals and allegedly not paid for the month he had already worked.
The allegations have raised concerns about the treatment of Liberian workers by foreign employers, payment of earned wages and the handling of assault complaints involving foreign nationals.
Flomo’s family and community members are calling for an investigation by the Ministry of Justice, the Liberia National Police Professional Standards Division, and the Ministry of Labour to establish what occurred and determine whether any laws or workers’ rights were violated.
