Vice President Jeremiah Koung has delivered a pointed message to members of the Liberian Senate, urging them to rise above excuses and fulfill their duties to the Liberian people. Addressing the Senate on Thursday, Koung called for decisive leadership and collaborative action to address the country’s pressing challenges.
“The Liberian people are tired of excuses,” the Vice President stated emphatically. He stressed the urgency of meaningful governance and challenged lawmakers to take concrete steps toward national development. Koung encouraged senators to align with President Joseph N. Boakai’s administration in implementing the ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development (AAID) and the County Development Agenda, recently launched in Buchanan.
Citing his deep sense of duty, Koung called for collaboration between the Executive and Legislative branches to drive development efforts. He noted that Liberians expect tangible results rather than delays and justifications. “Our people deserve better,” he said. “It is our shared responsibility to meet their expectations.”
Reflecting on recent political tensions in the House of Representatives, the Vice President acknowledged that Liberia’s democracy had been tested. However, he pointed to the peaceful conduct of the 2023 General, Presidential, and Legislative Elections as a testament to the nation’s growing stability.
He urged senators to maintain this momentum by prioritizing reconciliation and national unity over personal and political interests. “Our democracy demands maturity and a collective focus on the greater good,” he remarked.
Koung emphasized the Senate’s critical role in Liberia’s development, urging lawmakers to enact legislation that addresses citizens’ needs while promoting transparency and accountability.
Koung highlighted the ARREST Agenda as a comprehensive roadmap for Liberia’s economic growth and social progress. He called on senators to support the initiative, regardless of political affiliations. “Let us put the national agenda above all else and work together for Liberia’s advancement,” he urged.
He also stressed the need for the Senate to prioritize people-centered development, emphasizing that their actions must directly improve citizens’ lives. “We must recommit ourselves to good governance and to the principles that will uplift our people,” Koung declared.
The Vice President warned against complacency, reiterating that Liberians are eager for change and economic transformation. “Distinguished Senators, our people are watching and waiting. They need solutions, not excuses,” he said.
In closing, Koung urged senators to use their positions as platforms for advocacy and to address the pressing needs of the population. “This is a time for renewed patriotism and dedication to the common good,” he said.
Calling for unity, Koung emphasized that only through collective effort can the Senate meet the Liberian people’s expectations. “Let us lead with integrity, purpose, and unwavering commitment to our nation,” he concluded.
