The Liberia National Police (LNP) has acknowledged discussions surrounding a planned protest by motorcyclists in Monrovia under the banner of the Supreme Motorcycle Transport Union of Liberia (SUMTUL) Inc.
In a press release issued on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, and signed by DCP Cecelia G. Clarke, Chief Spokesperson of the LNP, the police emphasized the need to maintain peace, uphold the rule of law, and ensure the safety of all residents in and around Monrovia.
While recognizing the constitutional rights of citizens to peaceful assembly under Article 17 of the 1986 Constitution of Liberia, the LNP stressed that any planned protest must comply with legal regulations governing public demonstrations.
The police urged motorcyclists intending to protest to formally notify the Ministry of Justice, which is the statutory authority responsible for maintaining national peace and security.
The LNP assured motorcyclists that once the required arrangements are made and approved, the police will carry out their constitutional duty to ensure the safety of both the protestors and the general public.
At the same time, the LNP issued a stern warning against any acts of violence, confrontation, or activities that could disrupt public order. The police called on all motorcyclists to conduct themselves peacefully and in accordance with the law.
The LNP also encouraged the general public to continue their daily activities without fear, assuring them that the police remain actively engaged with all relevant stakeholders regarding the planned demonstration.
The statement comes amid growing reports of discontent among some motorcyclists, though the specific grievances prompting the planned protest remain unclear.
