The Minister of Mines and Energy, R. Matenokay Tingban, has accused some rural communities for supporting and protecting illicit mining activities across the country, warning that the government will intensify its crackdown on illegal mining operations.
Speaking on the growing concerns surrounding unregulated mining in several counties, Minister Tingban said some residents are allegedly working alongside illegal miners and allowing unauthorized excavators to operate in their communities without proper documentation.
“The communities themselves are aiding and abetting these illicit mining activities,” the minister said, adding that such actions continue to undermine government efforts to regulate the sector and protect Liberia’s mineral resources.
According to him, the Ministry of Mines and Energy has already instructed state security officers to conduct strict inspections on all excavators entering mining areas across the counties.
He said operators will now be required to present valid mining licenses and other legal documents before beginning any operation.
Minister Tingban noted that the ministry remains committed to strengthening enforcement measures aimed at stopping illegal mining, environmental destruction, and the smuggling of minerals.
He warned that individuals and communities found protecting or collaborating with illicit miners would face the full weight of the law.
The Mines and Energy Minister also called on local leaders and residents to cooperate with authorities by reporting illegal mining activities instead of providing support to offenders.
The Ministry of Mines and Energy has in recent months increased actions against illegal mining operations in different parts of Liberia as part of efforts to improve accountability and transparency in the country’s mining sector.
