The Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) has suspended all mining activities in and around Ben-Ben Town, Todee Statutory District, Rural Montserrado County.
The decision, outlined in a press release issued by the Ministry, applies to newly established mining operations and companies engaged in survey and exploration activities within the district.
The MME acknowledged the rights of legitimate license holders impacted by the temporary ban but emphasized that public safety, peace, and order take precedence over economic activities.
“This measure is necessary to allow the Liberia National Police and other relevant security agencies to continue their efforts to restore total calm in the area following a recent incident that resulted in the tragic loss of lives,” the release stated.
Regional Coordinators, Mining Agents, and Inspectors assigned to the rural Montserrado region have been instructed to strictly comply with the directive. The Ministry warned that violations would not be tolerated, as the primary goal is to stabilize the region and prevent further unrest.
The suspension follows reports of a violent clash among miners in Todee two weeks ago, which escalated into a deadly conflict. Although details of the incident remain under investigation, it has heightened concerns about unregulated mining and the potential for disputes in resource-rich areas.
The Ministry reassured stakeholders that the directive is a temporary measure to protect lives and foster peace in the district. “This intervention underscores our commitment to maintaining safety and ensuring that mining activities align with national security and legal frameworks,” the Ministry added.
As authorities work to address the underlying issues and investigate the recent violence, the Ministry has called on affected communities and stakeholders to cooperate fully with law enforcement and other security agencies.
