ABUJA, Nigeria, June 9, 2026 — The Nigerian government has dismissed as fraudulent a letter circulating on social media that was purportedly sent by Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs to her Liberian counterpart, warning that the document did not originate from any official government channel.
In a statement issued Tuesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Nigeria said the letter, allegedly signed by Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu and addressed to Liberia’s Foreign Minister, was fake and should be disregarded.
According to the ministry, the document concerns statements reportedly made by a Nigerian religious leader and has been widely shared online. However, officials stressed that the correspondence was neither authorized nor issued by the ministry or the Federal Government of Nigeria.
“The said letter is fake, unauthorized, and did not emanate from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or any official channel of the Federal Government of Nigeria,” the ministry stated.
The ministry further warned that the fabricated document appeared intended to mislead the public and create unnecessary diplomatic tensions between Nigeria and Liberia, two countries it described as friendly nations with longstanding relations.
Officials said a preliminary examination of the document revealed multiple inconsistencies with established diplomatic communication procedures and official correspondence protocols used by the ministry.
The government has urged members of the public, media institutions, and other stakeholders to ignore the letter and refrain from sharing unverified information capable of causing confusion or diplomatic misunderstandings.
The ministry disclosed that relevant authorities and security agencies have been alerted and are taking steps to identify those responsible for producing and distributing the fraudulent document.
Nigeria also reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, professionalism, and responsible diplomatic engagement, while assuring the Government and people of Liberia of its continued friendship, goodwill, and respect.
The statement was signed by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and released in Abuja on June 9, 2026.
