Nigerian Envoy Pledges Stronger Ties During Visit to New Kru Town

In a symbolic gesture of diplomacy and grassroots engagement, Nigerian Ambassador to Liberia, Her Excellency Ramat Mohamed, paid an official visit to the Municipal Borough of New Kru Town on Bushrod Island last week, signaling renewed efforts to deepen bilateral cooperation between Liberia and Nigeria.

Ambassador Mohamed was warmly welcomed by local leaders and residents during a ceremony organized in her honor. Speaking to the community, she expressed gratitude for the hospitality extended to her and emphasized the significance of strengthening ties not just at the national level, but within local communities as well.

“I am truly thankful for the opportunity to visit New Kru Town and witness firsthand the challenges and aspirations of this vibrant community,” Ambassador Mohamed said. “Liberia and Nigeria share a long-standing relationship rooted in mutual respect, cooperation, and shared goals for regional peace and prosperity.”

The Ambassador reflected on more than sixty years of diplomatic relations between the two West African nations, noting Nigeria’s historic role in Liberia’s peacebuilding and post-war reconstruction. She underscored Nigeria’s contributions through peacekeeping, development initiatives, and the presence of a robust Nigerian community in Liberia.

“From peacekeeping missions to regional diplomacy, Nigeria has always stood by Liberia. The presence of a strong Nigerian community here is a testament to our enduring friendship,” she remarked. She also encouraged Nigerians residing in Liberia to remain law-abiding and to contribute meaningfully to the nation’s development.

Governor of the Borough of New Kru Town, Hon. Robert Teah, formally welcomed Ambassador Mohamed and used the opportunity to present a detailed three-year development plan for the area. He identified key challenges facing the borough, including inadequate waste management systems, seasonal flooding, and limited access to development partnerships.

“We hope this visit marks the beginning of stronger collaboration,” said Governor Teah. “We are keen on establishing direct relations with state governments in Nigeria to share best practices and find sustainable solutions to our challenges.”

Governor Teah also expressed interest in leading a delegation to Nigeria to foster subnational cooperation and explore opportunities for urban development collaboration.

In a poignant cultural tribute, women from New Kru Town dressed the Ambassador in traditional Liberian attire and gave her the honorary name “Decontee,” meaning “the one who brings peace.”
