“Not the Way to Go” Ex-President Sirleaf Condemns Kolubah Expulsion, Defends Free Speech

By Emmanuel M. Kangar, Jr.

Former President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf has criticized the government’s decision to expel Representative Yekeh Kolubah, warning that such actions threaten Liberia’s commitment to free speech and democratic governance.

Speaking during an appearance on Truth FM on Thursday, April 30, 2026, the former Liberian leader expressed concern over what she described as an excessive response to dissenting views.

“I don’t think this is the way to go,” Sirleaf said. “I don’t think someone should be expelled because of freedom of speech. I signed the independence of freedom of speech. I don’t think someone should be overly disturbed when people say things.”

Sirleaf emphasized that while public discourse can sometimes be contentious, punitive measures such as expulsion are not appropriate responses. “I certainly do not think it should be a reason for someone to bear such penalty. There are other ways to curb that,” she added.

The former president stressed that respect for free speech is a cornerstone of democratic governance. “Freedom of speech is something that we must respect. That’s what makes good governance,” she concluded.

Her comments come amid growing debate over the government’s handling of dissent and political expression, with critics warning that recent actions could set a troubling precedent for democratic freedoms in the country.
