Nurses across Liberia marked International Nurses Day with renewed calls for improved salaries, better working conditions, and increased support for the country’s healthcare workforce.

Celebrations were held in Cestos City, Rivercess County, where healthcare professionals gathered under the global theme: “Our Nurses, Our Future — Empowered Nurses, Save Lives.”

Speaking at the event, nurses highlighted the challenges they face in the health sector, including inadequate pay, limited resources, and staffing shortages, which they say continue to affect service delivery in hospitals and clinics nationwide.

They urged the government and health authorities to prioritize salary increases and improved welfare packages as a way of motivating healthcare workers and strengthening Liberia’s fragile health system.

The event brought together nurses from various health facilities, local officials, and health stakeholders who joined in recognizing the critical role nurses play in delivering frontline healthcare services.

Speakers emphasized that empowering nurses through fair compensation and improved working conditions is essential to achieving better health outcomes for communities across Liberia.

International Nurses Day is observed annually around the world to recognize the contributions of nurses to public health and patient care.

This year’s celebration in Rivercess County also served as a platform for reflection on the need for sustained investment in the health sector to ensure quality and accessible healthcare for all Liberians.
