Monrovia–The Executive Director of the Office for the Establishment of a War and Economic Crimes Court in Liberia (OWECC-L), Dr. Jallah A. Barbu, has commended the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) for its recent substantial donation of office supplies and equipment, describing it as a significant boost to the institution’s operations.
Speaking during the presentation, Dr. Barbu expressed his appreciation for what he termed a “magnificent gesture,” especially as USAID winds down its operations in Liberia.
He said the donation is a clear sign of confidence from both local and international partners in the ongoing work of OWECC-L.
“This USAID donation is a magnificent gesture. It speaks volumes. Just imagine the support we would have received if not for the shutdown of USAID’s operations,” Dr. Barbu emphasized.
The items donated include a four-wheel drive vehicle, office stationery, a printer, a digital camera, and other essential supplies.
According to Dr. Barbu, these resources will significantly enhance the operational capacity of the office, which continues to work towards the full establishment of the War and Economic Crimes Court in Liberia.
He noted that OWECC-L has a robust maintenance department and stressed the importance of ensuring the judicial use and proper stewardship of public assets.
Dr. Barbu also highlighted the growing recognition of the office’s efforts, citing recent acknowledgment in an Italian newspaper as a morale booster.
“Our work was featured in an Italian newspaper, recognizing the progress we have made. This is motivational and affirms that we are on the right path,” he said.
Dr. Barbu reaffirmed the office’s commitment to fulfilling its mandate and ensuring the successful establishment of the court.
He further noted that the release of Executive Order No. 148 by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, which grants OWECC-L expanded authority and an additional US$2 million in budgetary allocation, will help resolve previous bureaucratic delays in fund disbursement.
“With the increased budget and reduced red tape, I believe our staff, including myself, will soon have reason to smile. It also empowers us to expand our outreach efforts,” he added.
OWECC-L, according to Dr. Barbu, is preparing to launch a nationwide outreach campaign to raise awareness and foster national dialogue on the establishment of the War and Economic Crimes Court.
On matters of security, Dr. Barbu disclosed that he has met with Deputy Police Director for Operations, Col. Nelson Freeman, to initiate discussions around enhancing security for the office and its personnel.
In closing, he stated that the continued support from development partners and the growing visibility of the office’s work are clear indications that meaningful progress is being made toward justice and accountability in Liberia.
