Police Clash with BBC Stringer

Paynesville, Liberia – A scuffle between a police officer and Moses Garzeawu, a BBC correspondent, at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex, has ignited widespread condemnation and calls for press freedom in Liberia.

When the altercation occurred, Garzeawu, dressed casually in shorts and slippers, was en route to cover the National County Sports Meet. Video footage circulating on social media shows the journalist being forcibly dragged out of the stadium by an officer, raising concerns about the treatment of media professionals in the country.

The Liberia National Police (LNP) swiftly acknowledged the incident and issued a statement pledging a full investigation into the matter. “The Liberia National Police is committed to upholding the principles of press freedom and ensuring accountability for all parties involved,” the statement read.

The LNP also urged the public to remain calm and refrain from actions that could escalate tensions. “Your cooperation and patience during this time are greatly appreciated,” the police said, promising transparency in their inquiry.

The incident has generated outrage among Liberians, with many demanding accountability and respect for journalists’ rights. Observers view this episode as a test of the nation’s commitment to press freedom, a cornerstone of any democratic society.
