Monrovia, Liberia — April 20, 2026 — President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has officially launched the Ministry of Local Government and dedicated its new office annex on Capitol Hill, marking what the administration describes as a major step toward decentralization and improved governance across Liberia.
Speaking at the ceremony, President Boakai emphasized that the creation of the ministry is aimed at strengthening local administration, empowering counties, and bringing government services closer to the people.
“This ministry is part of our broader effort to decentralize governance in every way,” the President said. “We want a system where local authorities are empowered to act and deliver for their people effectively.”
President Takes Aim at Critics
During his address, President Boakai also responded to growing criticism of his administration, using pointed remarks to underline his focus on long-term national development.
“If you are going somewhere and there are dogs barking at you, if you stop to throw stone at every dog, you won’t reach where you are going,” the President said, drawing applause from supporters.
He added a caution on accountability and productivity within public service.
“If you pretend to pay people, they will pretend to work.”
The President stressed that his government remains committed to results-driven leadership despite distractions, noting that Liberia’s progress requires discipline, unity, and sustained effort.
Minister’s Nyumalin Remarks: Commitment to Local Empowerment
Delivering remarks on behalf of the new institution, the Minister of Local Government Hon. Francis Sakila Nyumalin, Sr, described the launch as a “defining moment” for Liberia’s governance structure.
Minister Nyumalin assured that the ministry will prioritize community development, transparency, and citizen participation, adding.
“We are committed to building a system that listens to the people, responds to their needs, and ensures that development reaches every county. This ministry will serve as a bridge between the central government and local communities.”
He further pledged to work with stakeholders across counties to ensure that decentralization translates into real improvements in infrastructure, service delivery, and local decision-making.
A New Chapter in Governance
The establishment of the Ministry of Local Government comes as part of ongoing reforms intended to modernize Liberia’s public sector and enhance efficiency at all levels.
Officials say the newly dedicated building will serve as the operational hub for coordinating local governance policies and programs nationwide.
As the Boakai administration approaches its third year, the President reaffirmed his commitment to building a nation where citizens feel the direct impact of government.
“This is a journey,” he said. “And we remain committed to moving forward, removing obstacles, and ensuring that Liberia becomes a country its people can be proud of.”
