President Joseph Boakai has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to enhancing the welfare of the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL), directing the Ministry of National Defense to begin renovations on key military barracks across the country.
Addressing soldiers and dignitaries at the 68th Armed Forces Day celebration on February 11, 2025, the Liberian leader emphasized the urgent need to improve housing and other essential facilities for the nation’s military personnel.
Speaking at the Barclay Training Center (BTC) in Monrovia, President Boakai acknowledged the difficult conditions many AFL members face due to inadequate housing and overcrowded barracks. He instructed Defense Minister Prince C. Johnson III to collaborate with relevant agencies to assess military installations in Maryland, Nimba, and Bomi counties and initiate immediate improvements. He also reiterated plans to restore the Todee Military Barracks to full operational status, ensuring that soldiers have access to better living and training conditions.
Reflecting on the state of the military upon assuming office in January 2024, President Boakai noted that his administration inherited significant challenges. Despite these difficulties, he expressed confidence in the progress being made, highlighting efforts to modernize military infrastructure and provide AFL personnel with the necessary resources to perform their duties effectively.
The Armed Forces Day celebration was attended by regional allies, including Sierra Leonean President Julius Maada Bio, whom President Boakai welcomed as a close partner. He underscored the importance of strong military cooperation between the two nations and credited international support for helping to strengthen Liberia’s defense capabilities.
President Boakai assured service members that improving their welfare remains a top priority. He emphasized that a well-supported armed force is essential to maintaining national security and stability.
