Nigeria — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu as Nigeria’s new Minister of Foreign Affairs following the resignation of Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar.

Tuggar stepped down from the position to pursue political ambitions ahead of the 2027 general elections, creating a vacancy in one of the country’s most strategic ministries.

Until her new appointment, Odumegwu-Ojukwu served as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs. Her elevation, according to the Presidency, forms part of ongoing efforts to reposition Nigeria’s foreign policy framework toward greater efficiency, enhanced strategic engagement, and stronger global partnerships.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, President Tinubu congratulated the new minister and charged her to advance Nigeria’s national interests on the global stage. He emphasized the importance of economic diplomacy, regional stability, and the protection of Nigerians both at home and in the diaspora.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu brings a diverse background to her new role, combining experience in diplomacy, public service, and international representation.

Background and Early Career

Before entering public service, Odumegwu-Ojukwu gained international recognition in the world of pageantry. In December 1988, she emerged as the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria, a title she held through most of 1989. That same year, she went on to win the Miss Africa pageant held in Gambia.

Her success on the global stage continued as she represented Nigeria at both the Miss World competition in Hong Kong and Miss Universe in Mexico. She started a combined honours degree in Politics, Economics and Law at the University of Buckingham, but later transferred to the University of Nigeria. The Minister of Foreign Affairs-designate also attended the Nigerian Law School.

Notably, she became the first African to win the Miss Intercontinental title in 1989, further elevating her international profile. She also earned the Miss Congeniality award at the Miss Charm pageant in Russia, where she reached the semi-final stage.

Observers say her varied experiences and international exposure may prove valuable as she assumes leadership of Nigeria’s foreign policy at a time of shifting global dynamics.
