The Railly Road Public School in Wee Statutory District, Grand Bassa County, is facing serious challenges, including poor infrastructure, shortage of teachers, inadequate furniture and a lack of essential learning materials.
The situation has raised concerns among parents and community members who fear that the condition of the school could negatively affect the education and safety of children attending the institution.
The latest concern followed the collapse of a section of the school building after strong winds reportedly damaged the back wall. According to the Parents-Teachers Association (PTA) Chair, Mr. Joseph Biah, the incident could have resulted in injuries or loss of lives if students had been inside the building at the time.
Speaking to Verity Online News over the weekend, when parents and students gathered on the school campus to help rebuild the damaged section, Mr. Biah said the community considers the incident a timely intervention from God.
He explained that the children were not in the building when the wall collapsed, preventing what could have been a serious tragedy.
Mr. Biah said the school has been experiencing difficulties for some time. He noted that students lack adequate furniture, textbooks and a durable learning environment.
According to him, some children are forced to sit on makeshift chairs constructed from materials such as bricks and logs while attending classes.
The PTA Chair also expressed concern about what he described as limited government attention to the school.
He called on the government and education authorities to urgently assess the condition of the facility and provide the necessary support to ensure that students have a safe and suitable place to learn.
The Railly Road Public School was established about ten years ago with significant support from former Representative of Wee Statutory District, Jeh Byron Brown.
However, despite the importance of the school to children in the surrounding communities, residents say the institution continues to struggle with basic educational needs.
The school was also unable to fully meet the government’s expected reopening schedule for the 2026–2027 academic year, as it continues to face several challenges.
While other schools were preparing to resume classes, the condition of the Railly Road facility reportedly made it difficult for the institution to operate normally.
Meanwhile, the school’s principal, Titus Bob Yeaney, has disclosed another major challenge—the shortage of teachers.
Principal Yeaney said the only female teacher assigned to the school has left the institution, leaving him as the only teacher currently serving the students.
According to Principal Yeaney, his responsibilities now extend beyond teaching. He said he is simultaneously serving as the school’s teacher, registrar and administrator, making it extremely difficult to properly perform all of his duties.
The principal admitted that the situation has affected his ability to effectively teach all of the students.
Despite this, he said he believes the children at Railly Road Public School can compete academically with students in urban schools if they are provided with the necessary teachers, learning materials and facilities.
Principal Yeaney further disclosed that he has repeatedly informed the District Education Office about the shortage of teachers, but said no solution has yet been provided.
Parents and community members are therefore calling for urgent intervention to address the school’s structural problems, provide adequate furniture and textbooks, assign additional teachers and create a safer learning environment for children attending the Railly Road Public School.
