The Liberian Senate has unanimously voted to confirm Presidential nominee Jonathan Weedor as Chairman of the National Elections Commission.
The confirmation was made on Tuesday, 9 June 2026, following a vote in which 23 senators supported his nomination out of 30 members present. The decision followed recommendations from the Senate Committee on Autonomous Agencies.
With the confirmation, Mr. Weedor is now expected to lead the NEC alongside six other members of the Board of Commissioners, who collectively oversee the administration of elections and referenda in Liberia.
The NEC is one of Liberia’s key democratic institutions, responsible for ensuring the conduct of free, fair, and transparent elections across the country.
During his confirmation process, Mr. Weedor pledged to uphold the integrity of the electoral system and ensure that the will of the Liberian people is protected at all times.
He described adherence to the Elections Law as a “non-negotiable principle,” stressing that the Commission must operate strictly within its legal framework.
Mr. Weedor also emphasized the importance of teamwork within the Board of Commissioners, noting that institutional cooperation would be central to his leadership approach.
He further committed to working closely with NEC staff, political parties, civil society organizations, development partners, and other stakeholders involved in Liberia’s electoral process.
According to him, the credibility of elections depends not only on the Commission but also on broad collaboration and public trust.
Lawmakers who supported his confirmation cited his experience and understanding of electoral administration as key factors in their decision.
Some senators expressed confidence that his leadership would help strengthen public confidence in the NEC ahead of future electoral activities.
The National Elections Commission continues to play a critical role in maintaining democratic governance in Liberia, particularly in organizing credible elections and safeguarding the country’s political stability.
With his confirmation now complete, Weedor is expected to immediately assume full responsibilities as Chairperson of the Commission.
