Senate to Probe Labor Minister’s Work Permit Report; Wants Jobs for Deserving Liberians

The Liberian Senate is expected to commence a thorough streamlining process of a recent report summited by the Minister of Labor concerning issuance of ‘work permits.’

The Senate decision to scrutinize and properly look through the report comes after several hours of debate among Senators on the subject matter as many concern about the manner and form in which Liberians are allegedly being denied jobs opportunities due to the way work permits are being given out to foreign nationals.

During the   27th day sitting held on Tuesday, June 10, 2025- a motion voted for mandates the committee on Labor headed by Grand Gedeh County Senator Thomas Yaya Nimely – to immediately review the report and streamline jobs for Liberians and other concerning issues which need to be studied for possible action by the Senate.

The Labor committee as per the instruction from the Senate charged the committee to instruct the minister of Labor Cllr. Cooper Kruah to act in full compliance of section 45 of the decent work act of Liberia   which sets aside jobs that are exclusively for Liberians.

The recent decision from the Senate is predicated upon the consistency of Montserrado County Senator Abraham Darius Dillon, who alarmed over seven-thousand work permits allegedly issued to foreign nationals a concern that has drawn the Senate interest and has been a subject of discussion for the past four months.

 The committee is expected to report within two weeks – after which the Senate will make a decision on the matter.
