The front tire of a black SUV belonging to Bomi County Senator Edwin Melvin slipped entirely off a narrow steel plank bridge, leaving Senator Snowe’s heavy vehicle hanging over a flowing water below, following the burial rites of the late Tenneh Farley.
This is far more than just an SUV of a senior public official being trapped on a narrow bridge. It is a glaring reflection of many years of outright neglect of rural infrastructure and safety including brdiges and roads.
“A bridge should be a connection to opportunity and safety and not a trapdoor to tragedy. It is time for our leadership to fund the future of our rural roads. If a Senator’s modern, high-clearance SUV can be easily trapped and nearly plunged into a river by these “death traps,” what hope is there for the average citizen, the market woman, or the sick being rushed to a clinic in the time of emergency?” Gbenjamah Diawasu, who was on the scene, asked.
