MONROVIA, Liberia — Senator Konneh has accused Liberia’s security sector of being compromised by a drug cartel, calling for the arrest and prosecution of senior officials allegedly involved in protecting the network.
In a statement, Konneh said an expensive gift reportedly presented by the cartel to the country’s chief drug enforcer raises serious concerns and undermines the government’s declared war against drugs.
“There is no free lunch,” Konneh said, urging authorities to investigate all current and former senior officials allegedly linked to the cartel.
He also called for the appointment of an independent counsel to work alongside foreign investigators assisting with the ongoing probe.
According to Konneh, the alleged compromise within the security sector threatens Liberia’s anti-drug campaign.
He further described the controversy as President Joseph Boakai’s “LD$15 billion Containergate scandal,” warning that the matter could have lasting implications for the President’s legacy and Liberia’s future.
