The first batch of “third-country” deportees from the United States of America arrived in Sierra Leone on Tuesday, May 20, 2026.
“Sierra Leone signed a Third Country National Agreement with the US to accept 300 Ecowas citizens from the US per year with a maximum of 25 a month.” H.E. Timothy Kabba, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sierra Leone
international rights organizations, civil society actors, and and legal experts have heavily criticized third-country deportation policies and the conditions of migrant transfers. They argue that these policies and agreements violate asylum rights and put deportees at severe risk of human rights.
