The race for the Best New Artist category at the 2026 MTN Liberia Music Awards (MLMA) is beginning to take shape, with rising act Spankey Span of Twasa Republic emerging as one of the names generating early industry discussion.
With several new artists expected to compete for nominations this year, entertainers and promoters say Spankey Span has built noticeable momentum through consistent releases, growing digital engagement, and an expanding fan base.
His breakout track “I Say Hay” is credited with boosting his visibility and introducing his sound to a wider audience. Since then, he has continued to release music that has kept him active in entertainment conversations rather than relying on a single viral moment.
The Twasa Republic movement has also played a role in his rise. The youth-driven platform has grown its influence through online campaigns, collaborations, and performances, helping to strengthen the visibility of artists associated with it.
Consistency remains one of the key factors highlighted in his favor, with multiple releases during the eligibility period keeping him present in the public space and on digital platforms.
Speaking on the growing debate, entertainer and promoter Abraham B. Kanneh said this year’s competition reflects a shift in how new artists are being evaluated in Liberia’s music industry.
“The Best New Artist category is no longer just about one hit song,” Kanneh said. “It now includes consistency, streaming numbers, branding, and how well an artist connects with fans both online and offline. Spankey Span is clearly part of that conversation.”
He added that the category remains open, noting that artists such as Benkz, Trapper Latest, and others are also expected to be strong contenders depending on final nominations and audience engagement.
Industry watchers say Spankey Span’s strength lies in a mix of digital traction, youth support, and steady output, although strong competition and live performance impact will also influence final outcomes.
As the awards season approaches, attention is expected to increase as artists continue releasing new material and building momentum.
For now, Spankey Span remains among the emerging names to watch in Liberia’s evolving music scene as the 2026 MLMA approaches.
