MONROVIA, Liberia – STAND Chairman and lead organizer of the July 17 protest, Mulbah K. Morlu, on Friday publicly displayed a firearm, alleging that the government had planted armed individuals within the protest to spark violence and derail what organizers described as a peaceful demonstration.
Addressing supporters, Morlu displayed what he said was a pistol loaded with live ammunition. He claimed the weapon had been seized from an individual he alleged was a supporter of the current government and had been deployed to infiltrate the protest and provoke unrest.
According to Morlu, the alleged plan was intended to create panic, justify a security crackdown, and undermine the credibility of the demonstration.
Verity News has not independently verified Morlu’s allegations. As of the time of publication, the Government of Liberia had not issued an official response to the claims.
The allegations come amid heightened political tension surrounding the July 17 protest, with authorities and protest organizers repeatedly calling for the demonstration to remain peaceful.
