MONROVIA, LIBERIA – The Supreme Court of Liberia has issued a directive to members of the House of Representatives, particularly those identified with the “Anti-Speaker Bloc,” to suspend all activities and return to their previous state of operations.
This decision follows a petition challenging the legality of certain legislative actions.
In a writ signed by Cllr. Sam Mamulu, Clerk of the Supreme Court, the Court instructed the Minister of Justice and the lawmakers in question to appear before the Full Bench on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, at 9:00 a.m. at the Temple of Justice. The parties are required to file their official responses before this appearance.
The writ, served by Brigadier General Amos B. Kesseh Dickson, Sr., Marshall of the Supreme Court, emphasizes the need for all proceedings or actions to cease until the Court delivers its ruling on the matter.
The case will be presided over by Chief Justice Her Honor Sie-A-Nyene G. Yuoh, along with Associate Justices Jamesetta H. Wolokolie, Yussif D. Kaba, Yamie Quiqui Gbeisay, Sr., and Ceaneh D. Clinton-Johnson.
This legal dispute has drawn significant public interest as it questions the constitutional basis of recent actions within the Legislature. The Supreme Court’s intervention aims to ensure adherence to the rule of law and a resolution in line with the Constitution.
