MONROVIA, Liberia — The U.S. Embassy in Liberia has issued a security alert urging travelers to exercise vigilance in Kakata, Margibi County, following the escape of about 79 notorious inmates from Kakata Central Prison.
The alert, issued by the U.S. Embassy in Monrovia on September 21, 2026, followed a prison break at the Kakata correctional facility on September 20, during which approximately 79 inmates escaped.
According to the Embassy, Liberian security forces are conducting search and recapture operations as authorities work to locate the escaped inmates.
The U.S. Embassy has advised its citizens and other travelers to avoid the immediate vicinity of the Kakata correctional facility and exercise increased caution when traveling through Margibi County.
Travelers have also been urged to follow instructions from the Liberian National Police and other security personnel involved in the ongoing operations.
The Embassy further advised people to remain alert, avoid large crowds, maintain awareness of their surroundings and keep a low profile while moving through potentially affected areas.
It also encouraged travelers to monitor local media reports and official updates for information concerning the security situation and efforts to recapture the escaped inmates.
The September 20 jailbreak has heightened security concerns in Kakata and surrounding communities as authorities continue efforts to restore full control and account for all inmates who escaped from the facility.
The security alert comes as Liberian authorities continue to coordinate efforts to locate and recapture the fugitives and ensure the safety of residents in affected communities.
