UN Chief Urges Immediate Reopening of Strait of Hormuz

By Emmanuel M Kangar, Jr.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, issued a stark appeal to all parties involved in rising tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, calling for its immediate reopening to ensure the free flow of global trade and avert further economic disruption.

Addressing the UN Security Council, Guterres emphasized the strategic and humanitarian importance of the vital maritime corridor, through which a significant portion of the world’s energy supplies passes.

“I appeal to the parties: Open the Strait. Let ships pass. No tolls. No discrimination. Let trade resume. Let the global economy breathe,” he said, underscoring the urgency of de-escalation.

The Secretary-General warned that continued restrictions or interference with maritime traffic in the strait risk deepening global economic instability, disrupting supply chains, and exacerbating humanitarian challenges in vulnerable regions dependent on imported goods and fuel.

“The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz is not only an economic necessity but a humanitarian imperative,” Guterres told council members, urging restraint and adherence to international law.

Diplomatic efforts are ongoing as the international community seeks to prevent further escalation in the region.

The Security Council is expected to continue deliberations as calls grow for a coordinated response to safeguard one of the world’s most critical shipping lanes.
