UN Delegation in Liberia to Advance Peacebuilding Efforts

Monrovia, Liberia – A high-level delegation from the United Nations, led by Madam Nicola Clase, Chair of the Liberia Configuration of the Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) and Sweden’s Permanent Representative to the UN, is in Liberia from November 21–26, 2024, to advance discussions on the country’s peacebuilding priorities.

The mission aims to assess Liberia’s progress in peacebuilding, address emerging challenges, and develop strategies for sustainable peace.

On Friday, November 22, 2024, Madam Clase met with Liberia’s Foreign Minister, Madam Sara Beysolow Nyanti, who welcomed the delegation on behalf of President Joseph N. Boakai. During the meeting, Foreign Minister Nyanti expressed Liberia’s gratitude to the UN and the Peacebuilding Commission for their continued support.

She highlighted President Boakai’s ARREST Agenda, which emphasizes peacebuilding, governance, transparency, and the fight against corruption as essential elements for national development.

Nyanti also discussed the government’s commitment to justice and reconciliation, particularly the proposed establishment of a War and Economic Crimes Court (WECC). She noted that the Court would ensure accountability, provide justice for victims, and support long-term peace. Furthermore, she emphasized the importance of comprehensive transitional justice, including criminal responsibility, reparations, and national reconciliation.

Acknowledging Liberia’s youthful population, Nyanti stressed the importance of empowering young people to sustain peace. She called on the international community to continue supporting Liberia’s peacebuilding efforts, particularly in transitional justice and youth development.

The UN delegation, which includes representatives from civil society organizations women’s and youth groups, will also visit key peacebuilding project sites across Liberia to evaluate the impact of ongoing initiatives. Special attention will be given to the progress of the War and Economic Crimes Court.

This visit represents a critical step in strengthening Liberia’s partnership with the international community as the country advances its peacebuilding journey, focusing on justice, reconciliation, and inclusive development.
