MONROVIA, Liberia — Supporters and sympathizers of the ruling Unity Party (UP) gathered on Broad Street in central Monrovia on Thursday to mark the party’s September 17, 2023 campaign rally, remembered by its partisans as “Green Day.”
The gathering brings supporters together three years after the rally, which drew large crowds in Monrovia ahead of the 2023 presidential and legislative elections.
On September 17, 2023, Monrovia was awash in green as Unity Party supporters turned out despite heavy rainfall and flooding in parts of the capital.
The rally was held 23 days before the October 10, 2023 general and presidential elections, as political parties made their final appeals to voters.
For UP supporters, the event remains a major moment in the campaign of then-standard bearer Joseph Nyuma Boakai, who later won the presidency.
The rally took place during a closely contested election campaign against then-President George Manneh Weah, who was seeking a second term.
Boakai advanced to a runoff against Weah after the first round of voting and subsequently won the presidency, returning the Unity Party to power.
Party supporters have since referred to the September 17 rally as “Green Day,” celebrating it as a defining moment in their campaign.
Thursday’s gathering on Broad Street gives partisans an opportunity to reflect on the rally and celebrate the party’s electoral victory.
