LERC Launches Certification and Licensing Process for Electrical Professionals

The Liberia Electricity Regulatory Commission (LERC) has taken a significant step toward improving safety, professionalism, and standards in Liberia’s electrical sector by initiating the certification and licensing process for electrical professionals and contractors.

At an inception meeting held today, LERC engaged members of the interview panel responsible for overseeing the certification process. The panel comprises representatives from key institutions, including the Ministries of Mines and Energy, Public Works, Gender, Children and Social Protection, and the Education-TVET Division. Other stakeholders include the Rural Renewable Energy Agency (RREA), Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC), the Association of Liberian Construction Contractors, the Engineering Society of Liberia, the Liberia Chamber of Architects, the Liberia Chamber of Commerce, the National Standard Authority, and civil society organizations.

Deputy Minister of Energy Charles Umehai has been appointed as Chair of the panel, which will play a critical role in ensuring that only qualified and certified electrical professionals and contractors are authorized to operate in the country. This initiative is expected to enhance service delivery, minimize risks associated with poor electrical work, and contribute to Liberia’s overall development.

LERC officials emphasized the importance of the certification process in fostering a more regulated and accountable electrical sector, ensuring that industry professionals meet stringent standards to protect public safety and improve efficiency in service delivery.
